Hi White-teeth and Hearty-Smile are the dreams of everyone We are mostly judged by our looks Even though it is not right; but it is a 'Reality' The beauty and color of teeth are primary influencing factors. Due to different reasons, the change of teeth color or staining of teeth occurs. The staining of teeth can be divided into 2 types: Intrinsic Stains and Extrinsic Stains. Intrinsic stains happen when the layer underneath enamel is stained while the extrinsic stain is staining on the surface of the tooth or Prosmiles

To make it clear, intrinsic stains are formed due to diseases and/or other reasons during the development of teeth For e.g., a person residing in a fluoride-belt region excessive fluoride intake from drinking water may occur during pregnancy or other stage of life. It may coincide with the formation of baby's teeth. This over-exposure of fluoride leads to Fluorosis and results in brown-staining of teeth when the baby is born. Extrinsic stains is acquired by our activity/life style Let's see the reasons one-by-one

1) Food we take. The chromogens present in foods or coffee/tea get deposited on the surface of teeth resulting in staining of teeth

2) Tobacco consumption in habits like smoking The Nicotine content lead to teeth staining Chewing of pan masala, hans etc. can also be a cause for staining
3) Negligence in dental care and hygiene Deposition of plaques and food debris due to improper brushing will also lead to staining It is misunderstood that brushing more time may clean the teeth more. The abrasion of enamel occurs when brush more time results in yellow appearance of teeth in underneath layer

4) Diseases that affect enamel and dentine, treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy also causes variation in color of teeth

5) Materials like Dental Amalgum Amalgum is the silver-colored substance used for tooth restoration Similarly, chlorhexidiene-containing mouth washes may be avoided to prevent teeth staining or root canal.

6) Trauma Impact due to fall down/accidents leads to tooth death Trauma will change the teeth color to blue or black color

7) Age-related stains As mentioned earlier, with age, the enamel gets worn away showing the yellow color of underlying dentin

8) Genetics Genetics/ Hereditary also affects teeth color It is observed that teeth color of Europeans to be yellow, even though they look fair The appearance of teeth is white among West Indians, specifying the importance of genetics in tooth stain.

9) Medication. Medicines like doxycycline, tetracycline etc. lead to staining

10) Environment Persons who are over-exposed to fluorine or using fluorine contained tooth pastes may get tooth staining Remedies:

1) Modify the habits/life style like stop smoking, reduce the frequency of drinking coffee Wash the mouth well after coffee Maintain proper oral hygiene These are initial steps Extrinsic stains are easy to clean than intrinsic stains
2) Cleaning of teeth in clinics can remove stains If stains are more, the next procedure is
3) Bleaching can be done in home; excessive stains can be bleached in clinics Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used for bleaching Normally comes as carbamide peroxide For bleaching, customized trays are available in market to keep these gel and apply to teeth follow the manufacturer's instructions to do home bleaching Concentration of Hydrogen peroxide/carbamide peroxide is lower For excessive stains,

this may not proper In such cases, higher concentrations can be used in clinics under doctors supervision One of the complications of bleaching is tooth sensitivity It may last only for 24 hours. So bleaching treatment is not to be worried For intrinsic stains, cleaning/ bleaching may not be effective For such cases, Venering and capping can be done

4) Veneering: Surface of teeth is reduced and a small shell is placed there. This masks or covers the discoloration of tooth 5) Crown or Capping Size of the teeth has to be reduced more Then a crown of adequate size is placed there as it is done in root canal treatment Crowns cover the teeth more than veneering For flourosis, these treatments are more effective Reasons and remedies are discussed in this episode You may be aware of many things and some may be new to you Give you comments below Keep watching, Thank you.
